SHIGARAKI FIRE FESTIVAL 2025

Come See It. Feel It. Be Part of It.

The fire is coming.
And with it, the heartbeat of Shigaraki.

Each year, deep in the summer hills of Shiga, a path of flame is carried through the dusk—torches lit from a sacred spark, footsteps echoing centuries of gratitude and prayer. This is the Shigaraki Fire Festival: a living ceremony of thanks to the gods of fire, earth, and clay.

Born from the mountain and the kiln, the festival honors not just tradition—but the quiet resilience of a town that has shaped its life from soil and flame. These aren’t just rituals. They are offerings. An expression of deep respect for nature, craft, and community.

On Saturday, July 19th, torches will once again rise from the streets to the summit of Mt. Atago. Along the winding road, a river of flame will snake its way into the night—carried by families, friends, potters, and pilgrims. The drums of Shigaraki will call out into the valley. And above it all, fireworks will open like prayers in the sky.

This is not a festival to watch.
It’s one to walk. To feel. To carry.

Torchbearer registration remains open until the day of the event.
Whether you're a local or a first-time visitor, you’re invited to take part—walk the path, light a torch, offer thanks.

Behind the scenes, a team of volunteers helps keep it all moving, glowing, and safe. If you're drawn to tradition, to meaning, to moments that matter—there’s space for you here too.

We’ll be ready. The fire will be ready. Will you be?
