Shigaraki no miya ato (Miyamachi remains)

Miyamachi remainsIn Tempyo 14 (A.D.724) emperor shomu started to build the Shigaraki-shurine and construction continued for many years. The shrine has often been called the capital of an illusion because no trace of it has ever been found. In the year 2000 ruins from the palace were found. Excavations are ongoing at the site and we will hopefully learn more.

Main fall of Iimachi-Shurine

Main fall of Iimachi-ShurineIt was built in the early Nara period. After the Heian period, it prospered as a sacred place of mountain worship or mountaineering training. The main hall was built in 1650 and was decorated with rich colors. In 1976 the main hall had undergone repairs.

Atago-Shirine / Ceramic Shrine

Atago-Shirine / Ceramic ShrineThis shrine is located on the top of Mt. Atago where you can see the whole view of the town of Shigaraki. There clay and fire are worshipped as a deity. A gate and pair of guardian dogs of ceramic can be seen.

Senzenji Ato Magaibutu (Buddha of Senzenji-temple)

Buddha of Senzenji-templeSenzenji-temple was destroyed by fire in the middle of Ages. In the back of the house, stands a Buddha engraved on the rock face.

Stone Tablet of Matsuo Baho

Stone Tablet of Matsuo BahoMatsuo Basho is a famous Haiku poet of the Edo period. His Haiku is carved with the stone tablet.

The Ruins of Koka-Temple

The Ruins of Koka-TempleFrame of the big Buddha was built in this temple following the order of the emperor Shomu.
